Origin of Surname
The name is derived from the Norman surname Anslech (Anslech of Briquebec was tutor to Duke Richard of Normandy). This was derived from the Old Norse man`s name Aslak, the Ass or Ans having meant a god [1]
The name was written in Jersey, in 1309, Aunlek, which was softened to Aunley, which was how it was pronounced. This explains the confusion among 20th century Jersey historians as to whether there were two separate families in the Island, Anley and Aunley.
The name also features in the Extente of 1331, showing that the family held land then in St Peter, with which parish it was primarily associated. After a long insular history, the bearers of this surname, comparatively recently, became extinct in their native Island. There are, however, descendants of the family overseas.
Guernsey
According to Payne's Armorial of Jersey, the family in Jersey in the 19th century originated in Guernsey and later became established in Jersey, marrying into the Nicolle and Lempriere families. Research since then has discredited the theory. There were Anleys in Guernsey but their source is likely to have been Edouard Anley of St John (see Anleys of St John).

- Jean Anley, who married Jacquetta Langlois (1480- ), daughter of Jean and Maria, was born in St Lawrence about 1486. Guillinitte Anley, born in the same parish about 1494, may have been his sister.
