No formal censuses of Jersey’s population were undertaken before 1841. A number of head counts were taken in earlier years to discover the number of men liable to military service, but these were purely head counts and did not record names.
There are some documents in existence which record the names of residents of various parishes at different times, and one of these is the Roll of the Tresor in the Parish of Trinity 1532.
The Trésors de l’Eglise record gifts from devout and affluent parishioners who made annual donations to their church so that they could be buried in the church, a practice which was prohibited in 1577. The funds raqised were used for repairs to the church and the rectory. The donations were in the form of small rentes, payable yearly, and based on the price of wheat.
These were the donations recorded for the four Vingtaines of Trinity in 1532, and also from residents of St John who were members of Trinity Church.
