Jersey sea captains

Paddleicon.png

This list is based on that researched by John Jean for his 1982 book Jersey Sailing Ships. It is not quite clear what criteria he adopted for the men he classed as 'Jersey's sea captains'. Some were not born in Jersey, some were masters of vessels which were not Jersey based, but it is likely that most of them operated out of Jersey ports at some point in their career

The list differs in many respects from the Lloyd's Captains Register. We are currently researching the Jersey captains' names in this list and will add a new section to the site as soon as the work is completed.

Note that many different Jersey vessels used the same names over the years. It was also not unknown for fleet owners to have two vessels in service at the same time with the same name. So where a captain is shown as master of a particular vessel, it may not be the same ship as another captain is shown as commanding. For this reason, although Jerripedia contains separate articles on a number of ships, particularly privateer vessels, we have not linked to them because the reference may be to another vessel of the same name.

The author's original text is littered with question marks, and it is not always clear what part of the entry is being questioned, so these marks have been largely deleted. Researchers are invited to exercise the usual caution in relation to dates and relationships that we urge for any Jerripedia family history content.

Individuals have been linked, where appropriate, to their family pages rather than specific family trees.
