At the beginning of the 19th Century Britain was at war with France and Jersey's Lieut-Governor, Lieut-General Sir George Don wanted to ensure that the island was ready to defend against any French invasion. He ordered a full census to be taken of all men liable for Militia service. This list of nearly 6,000 islanders provides family historians with a valuable source of information a quarter of a century before the first official census was taken in 1841
