Frank Sturdy Sinnatt




Frank Sturdy Sinnatt (1880-1943), the son of Francis Sinnatt and Sarah Sturdy, was a fuel research chemist

Born in Grands Vaux, St Helier, on 4 May 1880, he was educated at the College of Technology, Manchester and became head of the Fuel Section of that college, lecturer on fuels at Manchester University, and Director of the Lancashire and Cheshire Coal Research Association.

From 1924 to 1931 he was Assistant Director of Fuel Research in the Government Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, and in 1931 he became Director. In 1919 he was made a Member of the Order of the British Empire and in 1935 a Companion of the Bath. He was Doctor of Science (Manchester), Fellow of the Institute of Chemistry, and Fellow of the Institute of Physics. In 1938 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.

He was on the councils of the Institute of Mining Engineers, of the Institute of Fuel, and of the Colliery Owners Research Association. He was Member of the Safety in Mines Research Board, of the Coal Utilisation Association, and of the Royal Swedish Institute for Engineering Research.

He commanded the Manchester University Officers Training Corps until 1922 and published a large number of scientific and technical papers on coal.

He married Louise Midgley Badger.
